The Wireless DSL package, unlike traditional DSL or cable modems, doesn't need phone or cable lines to operate. It uses a microwave antenna which is mounted on your roof, which communicates via line of sight with a microwave antenna on our tower. This provides a
number of advantages and disadvantages for the customer. The advantage is primarily one of distance. Wireless DSL has a range of approximately 15 miles providing that there is line of sight between the two antennas. The disadvantage is that of reliability. Antennas in the elements of Alaska are prone to weather damage not to mention the occasional fight between two bald eagles, "...yes, it really happened, broke the hell out of our antenna". Wires, needless to say, are less susceptible to this type of damage. If you are out of range for those type of services, we are the next best bet. Typically, customers see speeds of 200-300kb/second above the speed package they purchased. The second drawback to wireless DSL service is the initial cost of setup which usually runs nearly $700. This is not profit for us. It is the cost of the microwave equipment that must be mounted on site for the service to work. Once you are over this hurdle, the monthly fee is comparable to other "always on" broadband Internet services.
